The Truth About Commitment
A few weeks ago I wrote an article about commitment. I told you about the time I trained a frog who was not committed. You can read the whole story here.
Being committed means following through with doing what you said you would do.
If you told coach you are going to come lift tomorrow during your free period, you go lift tomorrow during your free period. Even if your crush asks you to hang out. Even if you bombed that quiz. Even if the zombie apocalypse comes.
Being committed looks like keeping promises to yourself.
This is also a key to building trust and love with yourself. If you promised yourself you were going to get up at 5 am to run, it means you get up at 5 am to run. It means making sure you go to bed at a reasonable hour to set yourself up for success. No one is going to know if you woke up at 5 am or not except for you. Kya won’t tell anyone, even if she could.
Also, don’t set yourself up for failure by promising yourself you will get up to train at 5 AM if you have been going to sleep at 1:00 AM for the past few weeks and not waking up until Kya and I are on our second walk of the day.
Committing to yourself and to your training looks like not cutting corners.
If you are supposed to run a full field sprint, don’t turn around one single step before the end line. If you are warming up, don’t mindlessly do the exercise and stop a step or two short. If the last rep feels heavy af, don’t turn your primary muscles off, lose your core, and not get full range of motion. The way you do one thing, is the way you do everything. Do it with intent.
Committing to yourself looks like more than just showing up to training consistently.
If you are consuming negative social media and treating your body like a trash can outside of training, you’re not fully committed to yourself and/or your training. Feeding and fueling your body like a trash can will help you performance like a trash can. Feeding and fueling your mind with negativity will help you lack confidence.
You get one body and one brain for your lifetime. Take out the trash, and bring into the world the good you want to see in the world.
You got you for life, homie. Are you committed?
