Just Keep Swimming

What do you do when you check off all the boxes and you still keep losing?

Here are 3 solutions:

Reassess.

Start to ask why you keep losing so you can find for holes in your training. Is nutrition on point? Hydration? Is sleep as good as it can be? Are training volume and intensity at appropriate levels right now? How is your mindset before, during, and after competition? Any drama in your life you have to let go of?

Redefine.

“Lose /lo͞oz/     Verb

to be deprived of or cease to have or retain (something)”

If you put all your effort into a competition and you lose, it sucks. You may have been deprived of a trophy or ceased to have retained the pride of saying you are the champion, but look at what you do get:

  • Character built from being consistent and working hard.

  • Better mindset that you will be able to utilize in the next one and/or in life.

  • Gaining physical strength which will add to longevity and reduce your risk of injury.

  • Growth and courage from getting out of your comfort zone

…Those seem like wins to me. And there are many more. I challenge you to think about them. What else may you gain from putting everything you have into a competition and losing?

I understand that sometimes things just don’t go your way. That’s’ called life. Here is a helpful life hint for when nothing is going your way:

Focus on the thing(s) that are going your way. Are you still breathing? Do you have food, shelter, and water? What about the piece of technology you are reading this on that also has instant to access to basically everything ever?

You can always find something.

Keep going.

Or as my friend Dory puts it, “just keep swimming.”
