10 Summer Reading Books

The following books are books I read this year that I did not use for my Book of the Month (BOM) posts on instagram over at @thebettercoach (click to see my BOM posts).

Don’t trip that these books were not chosen for a BOM post. They are all wonderful books. The reason they did not make the gram is because I chose other books I read at the time that I thought would resonate more with female youth athletes.

If you are realizing that it is already August and you did not read one book all summer, including that super long book you need to start and finish by the beginning of the school year, here are some suggestions:

For creativity

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

Whether you are a self identified procrastinating artist or not, this one’s for you. It’s aimed at artists, but applies to all.

The NYT mini Crosswords Vol. 1

Thanks mom and dad for the birthday gift! I’ve been using this one to get my brain juices flowing sometimes before I write or create, or when I need a quick break from writing or creating.

For life

Stoicism and The Art of Happiness

Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind

Man’s Search For Meaning

Not the easiest, breeziest summer reading list with these three, but there is never a wrong season to read and ponder about life.

For coaches

InsideOut Coaching by Joe Ehrmann

Please join me in making this book prerequisite reading for every coach on every level ever. As well as anyone working with youth.

Easy Strength

Back to basics.

For fun

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King.

The sequel to The Shining. When I read this in public, everyone was like, “OMG, I love that book!”

Nobody Move by Denis Johnson

More fiction to get lost in (perhaps some parental advisory with this one).

A Pocket for Corduroy

Bonus pick for when your niece asks you read this book a gazillion times the same day you gave it to her (this is a joyous share, do not mistake it for a complaint).

What’s the best book you read this summer? Let me know in the comments below!
